This is a short introduction to the historical, social and literary background of Dante and his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. The presentation will focus on reading and commentary of the V Canto, and the tradition of courtly love. The reading of some verses will be juxtaposed by images that will visually interpret Dante’s poetry.

The Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Chicago and Italidea, is pleased to contribute to this series of initiatives intended to present the extraordinary work of Gianni Rodari, beloved author of children's literature.
On the eve of the 30th anniversary of his death, this initiative is offered to allow an audience across the ocean to become familiar with one of the most translated Italian authors of the 20th century, by exploring the work of Rodari. Rodari the journalist, Rodari the poet, Rodari the intellectual, and of course Gianni Rodari the great teacher enquiring into the fantastic world of childhood.
His work is full of impossible stories, imaginary characters, and invented words. Nursery rhymes offer a new meaning to the institution of education. Poetic toys give life to a language of fantasy, which brings true creativity. Letters of the alphabet rush to hitch a ride, provoking national cataclysms; incorrect accents shake up the lives of people; dogs speaking with a Tuscan accent. Learning to play: grammar and fantasy together at last, give life to a ring-around-the rosy of words, images and sounds. Maestro Gianni looks on at this delightful dance, sitting in his seat, smiling.

II Consolato Generale d' Italia a Chicago, in collaborazione con l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Chicago e Italidea, e' lieto di contribuire a questa serie di iniziative che ripropongono la geniale figura di Gianni Rodari, autore amatissimo di letteratura per l'infanzia.
Alla vigilia del Trentennio dalla sua scomparsa e' questa l'occasione, per il mondo d'oltreoceano. di conoscere uno degli scrittori piu' tradotti del Novecento italiano.
Rodari giornalista, Rodari poeta, Rodari intellettuale. Ma prima di tutto Gianni Rodari maestro di scuola, conoscitore e grande indagatore del mondo dell'infanzia. Al centro del suo mondo storie inverosimili, personaggi irreali, parole inedite. Filastrocche che racchiudono una concezione nuova dell' istituzione scuola. Giocattoli poetici danno vita a una grammatica della fantasia che porta in se' un vero e proprio programma di creatività. Lettere dell'alfabeto che scappano in autostop, provocando cataclismi nazionali; accenti malmessi che stravolgono le vite dei personaggi; cani toscani che perdono la testa per colpa della gorgia. Imparare giocando: grammatica e fantasia si prendono per mano dando vita a un girotondo di parole, immagini, suoni. II maestro Gianni assiste alla deliziosa danza, seduto sulla sua sedia. E sorride.
